The Career Academies of Columbus City Schools

The Academies of CCS serve as the district’s strategic response to this moment. By blending rigorous academics with hands-on learning and real-world career exploration, The Academies move education beyond theory and into meaningful application. Students do not simply learn about careers; they experience them. 

Freshmen are already actively participating in the Freshman Academy experience, entering a smaller, supportive learning community that introduces College and Career Connected Learning. During this foundational year, students strengthen core academic skills while building leadership, collaboration and problem-solving abilities — the same competencies regional employers prioritize. Through project-based learning, students develop communication, cooperation, and analytical skills before selecting a specialized pathway aligned with their strengths and aspirations.

During their sophomore year, students begin taking courses in their selected pathway as well as visit Fort Hayes Career Center and Columbus Downtown High School. This exposure allows students in their junior year to decide between continuing on their pathway or attending one of CCS’ career centers. In their senior year, students who select their pathways will continue their coursework and earning credentials while participating in external work-based learning experiences. 

This structured progression ensures that students move forward with clarity and confidence, making informed decisions grounded in both exploration and experience. By the time they enter the upper grades, their learning becomes more specialized and intentionally aligned to real industry sectors within the Columbus area.

Across CCS high schools, students engage in industry-aligned academies intentionally designed to reflect neighboring workforce sectors and high-demand fields. At the Academies at Beechcroft, the Academy of Smart Automation and Design prepares students to explore digital electronics, computer systems, smart automation technologies and media arts — areas connected to advanced manufacturing and technology industries that dominate more than 60% of the regional project pipeline. 

At the Academies at East, the Academy of Media Production will immerse students in arts and communications, equipping them to create and communicate in a digital economy increasingly connected to logistics, marketing and data systems. At the Academies at Walnut Ridge, students will participate in the Academy of Smart Automation and Advanced Mobility, examining engineering, automation and the future of transportation systems — sectors experiencing rapid regional growth. At the Academies at West High School, the Academy of Health Care and Smart Automation blends patient-centered health sciences with advanced technology, preparing students for life sciences and health innovation careers expanding across Central Ohio. 

Additional academies — including the Academy of Entrepreneurship and Sports Medicine at Beechcroft, the Academy of Health Sciences at East, the Academy of Communications and Logistics at Walnut Ridge, and the Academy of Marketing and Innovation at West High School — extend opportunities in business development, medical pathways, global supply chains, branding and operational technology.

Through College and Career Connected Learning, students earn college credit, complete interdisciplinary projects, engage with industry professionals, and gain practical experiences aligned with workforce demand. Whether building automated systems, producing multimedia campaigns, studying human anatomy, developing business plans or analyzing logistics networks, students connect classroom learning to real opportunity. 

Columbus ranks as the fastest-growing region in Ohio, accounting for the majority of the state’s population growth, with nearly half of new residents relocating from other states in search of opportunity. The Academies ensure CCS students stand prepared to participate fully in this growth.
